Why will not my Diesel Start?

What it takes to make a race DieselThere are three things that are necessary for a diesel racing;.(1) the heat of compression,(2) of fuel at the right time and pressure.(3) the speed of crank shaft to provide sufficient compression. The engine must also have enough air.A diesel under the purist form is a very simple engine. What makes a diesel hard to start?
  • If the fuel is not injected into the cylinder at the right time the engine will be very difficult to start. The fuel must be injected before the piston reaches top dead center to create a flame front in the cylinder. The timing is critical for engine operation.
  • If the fuel injection pressure is not enough that the engine will be difficult to start. The injection pressure is difficult to test and usually manifests itself in a difficult start, lack of energy and sometimes unburned fuel smoke.
  • The engine must turn the crank at a rate sufficient to provide the necessary compression, the heat in the cylinder to ignite the fuel. Many hard start problems with diesel engines can be attributed to a malfunctioning starter.
How can I do it yourselfer check some of these things? If you own a diesel and will work on it, it might be worth investing in tools to set the fuel injection timing. There are many methods of setting the timing of a diesel. Some older diesel use a tube dropwise. The V.W. we diesels a dial indicator to check travel plunger pump motors on IDI (indirect injection). Some of Cummings diesels are timed in the same way. Some of the new diesels are timed using an analysis tool for inter face with engine management computer. If you work on your diesel, buy a book, preferably the manual of the plant. You can check if all the fuel filters are clean. You can check to see if your glow plugs work. The best method I've found to check the glow plugs is to use a direct current (DC) amplifier clip. This is a counter which clamps on a wire and to read the amount of current flowing through it. Most glow plugs take about nine amps after the initial peak. You can get the exact figure of the factory technical data. DC amps clamps are much cheaper than they were in the past. I bought small portable hand unit that our shop uses to Sears for under $ 50.00. If you use a starting fluid into a diesel with glow plugs, it almost always burns the glow plugs, even if they are new.The clamp amp you bought to check your glow plugs is a good tool to check your entry. Starter measure current consumption and compare it to the manufacturer's specifications. Anything beyond these simple things require tools and expertise.
